An IndAcc piston type accumulator has a light weight piston where the dynamic seals are aligned with the piston center and where both the gas and liquid skirt ends have graphite filled Teflon guide rings. The IndAcc has polished rod attached to the piston center, passing through a chevron stuffing box seal, centrally of the liquid end plug; that enables volume stored to be known.

In applications as discussed (see: PistoLite) the addition of one IndAcc to the system enables pump cascade control. Pump cascade control is the use of multiple inexpensive fixed displacement fixed rpm low cost unsophisticated highly reliable pumps to produce infinitely variable flow rate when HydroTrole IndAcc accumulators are used. When the demand from the system is at a higher rate then can be produced by one pump the IndAcc will begin to discharge before the PistoLite discharges; this is because the anular area around the IndAcc tail rod is less than the area of the gas side of the piston. therefore when the gas side of the IndAcc and the gas sides of the PistoLite accumulators are interconnected and the hydraulic oil side of the PistoLite accumulators and the hydraulic oil side of the IndAcc are interconnected the differential area of the IndAcc ensures that it begins to discharge first. Immediately the IndAcc begins to discharge, its tail rod trips on another pump by closing its unloading valve. Additional pumps will be brought online sequentially in the same way if system demand is still exceeding rate of supply.

Conversely when more pumps then are necessary for rate of supply are running the accumulators will refill and as they do the IndAcc will retract putting more pumps into a no pressure, recirculation mode. These IndAcc plus PistoLite packages systems known as acc-packs do not give stepped rates of flow because the accumulator behavior provides smooth transition between any numbers of pumps running at one time. An IndAcc provides pump cascade control ensuring infinitely variable flow rate and minimum horsepower usage.
